Lancaster ISD Opens Doors to Five Satellite Learning Centers

Lancaster, Texas/Lancaster ISD

This week, the district opened the doors of five Satellite Learning Centers located throughout the city where Lancaster ISD students can have access to internet-ready computers outside of the hours of the school day. The centers are the result of strategic partnerships formed with some of the local churches and apartment complexes this summer. Each center features five computers, a printer and a safe learning environment.

“Through our conversations with students and parents, we recognized that several students did not have access to technology and internet services, which are often required to complete research or build skills at home,” Executive Director of Accountability Dr. Lamont Smith said. “These Satellite Learning Centers now allow our students five more access points throughout the city of Lancaster.”

The centers are open Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. and each location has an adult onsite to assist students with assignments, research and resources.
“This is a unique opportunity and we are thankful for the partnerships and our visionary leaders in the community who embrace this initiative,” Dr. Smith said. “Parents will know their children are safe while they are in the care of our partners and recognize that their children will receive additional academic support in the evening at one of our five locations.”
For Lancaster ISD Superintendent Dr. Michael D. McFarland, these centers represent yet another way that the district is utilizing a community partnership to fulfill a need that will aid in increasing student achievement.

“Our mission, in collaboration with parents and communities, is to ignite learning that translates into sustainable success for all students in an ever-changing society,” he said. “Therefore, a key component that we emphasize is an increased focus on collaboration with parents and communities. For us to be successful, we must build a true collaborative partnership among the schools, the parents and the community.”

Dr. Smith agrees.

“The need for our students to have access to resources that have the potential to improve academic achievement and partnering with our stakeholders for this endeavor is remarkable,” he said. “Lancaster ISD understands the need to have partners who can truly benefit our students and community.”
